Karen has been qualified as a nurse since 1982. She trained in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin and then relocated to the U.K where she developed a passionate interest in the management of health issues in school aged children.
Karen worked in both primary and secondary schools in London, initially as a school nurse and then as a school nurse manager for the Kensington Chelsea and Westminster health Authority, training other school nurses and monitoring the standards of healthcare provision to students in all schools in the area.
Returning to Ireland in 1997 she worked as the sole school nurse in Alexandra College, a private primary and secondary day and boarding school with in excess of 500 students. Being a new post she was responsible for the setting up of a school nurse role in the College, and the management of all health issues that arose within the school, including emergency care, general first aid, vaccinations, medication management, assessment of ill students, liasing with Parents, the local Dr and hospitals and referral to other professionals as needed. Karen spent 14 years in this role.
Wanting to stay up to date with all medical procedures Karen combines her work in schools with a part time Practice Nurse role in primary care, working with General Practitioners in the Community.
Being a Parent of 3 young adults, Karen also has an understanding of the worries and concerns that Parents have about their children, particularly when they are unwell and away from home.
